Michael Obrist [feld72] in conversation with Ana Filipović about "Housing as a Critical Spatial Practice"

Housing is a fundamental prerequisite for human well-being, yet it cannot be understood through architectural concerns alone. At the same time, architecture cannot disengage from the social dimensions of housing. This talk draws on Jane Rendell’s notion of Critical Spatial Practice to frame interventions that engage both with material sites and with the disciplinary structures that shape them. These unfold across art and architecture, the private and the public, theory and practice, each inherently critical, spatial, and interdisciplinary. In a time marked by a global housing affordability crisis, when commodification often overshadows the very essence of housing, it becomes urgent to confront the many inequalities bound up with it. Addressing these issues calls for a range of approaches, from artistic and written work to architectural design. The talk presents a series of projects on housing that, each in its own way, challenge prevailing assumptions and expose the inequalities embedded within them, while opening new perspectives on what housing might mean today.
