ARCH+ Vienna – The End of Housing (as a Typology)
ARCH+/Anh-Linh Ngo/Forschungsbereich Wohnbau und Entwerfen der TU Wien/Michael Obrist/Christina Lenart/Bernadette Krejs
As the knee-jerk injunction in discussions surrounding the accessibility of housing, Vienna has become somewhat of a myth. In times of rising pressures on the housing market, the Austrian capital is envied for its affordability and the continuity of its efforts to provide its residents with quality apartments. This testifies to both the scarcity of such exemplary cases and the enduring power of the myth of “Red Vienna.” The city earned its nickname from the left-wing City council, which implemented radical social housing policies between the First and Second World Wars. What made it so successful? What remains of this model today? And what should social housing look like in the 21st century?
ARCH+ guest-edited by Michael Obrist, Christina Lenart, Bernadette Krejs.
The print issue is now available in English in collaboration with Spector Books.
